WHAT IS PILATES?

Pilates is a comprehensive programme of exercises designed to improve posture, tone muscle, mobilise and balance joints as well as relieve stress and tension. Central to the method is an ‘awareness of your own body’ and each exercise is built around eight principles:

Relaxation  -  Co-ordination  -  Alignment  -  Centring  -  Breathing  -  Concentration  -  Stamina  -  Flowing Movement

Through the process of mobilising and stabilising different parts of the body you will find your mind/body connection starts to improve. This is why people often leave class feeling calmer & more "connected".  Suitable for anybody regardless of age or fitness level, Pilates is also very effective if you struggle with lower back issues. It's consistent success rate has brought it to the attention of Osteopaths, Chiropractors & Physiotherapists, many of whom have either set up pilates studios or have close relations with Pilates Teaches in their area. Each teacher will have their own style & preferences and will cater their classes accordingly. It is best to try a few teachers out and see which you prefer.
